In the first few weeks of school, Toroa went on camp to Dunedin. We are learning to appreciate the land we live in and how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful country. We visited all sorts of places including Steam Punk, we dissected a squid at the Marine Lab, had an art lesson at the Dunedin Art Gallery (including a luck-timed visit from some Chinese lions) and had a swim at the pool. As part of our belonging unit on 'We Are Toroa,' we also visited the Royal Albatross Colony and learnt a lot about these majestic birds. If you would like to see more photos of our camp check them out in the Galleries tab.
Toroa has written a class poem about camp.
Toroa Camp
I remember…
The beautiful, colourful infinity portal at Steam Punk
Cutting up the squid with scissors
Popping the eye of the squid
The violet squirt of thick, red goo
The stickiness of the anenomes
The starfish moving across my fingers
My clothes smelling like squid
The instant chatter of the nearby room
Looking down into the echoing chasm
Staring down at the foaming waves, rushing against the rocks at Lover’s Leap
Looking out to the deep blue horizon, topped with white caps
Being frightened at the top of the hydroslide
Flying down the fast hydroslide
When we saw Jack
The cool spray of the waterfall, resting on my face
The butterflies swooping around me
Trying to get a butterfly to land on me
The ping and buzz of air hockey
The huge disappearing gun
Silently watching the giant albatross resting on its wide-eyed chick
The gasp as the royal Toroa flew overhead
Playing spotlight
Pegging Mr Veix and having him walk around town
The dazzling birds we drew
The dancing lions
When it took Mr V three times to get up on the whale, but he made it
My dad was like an alien
When we climbed the steepest street
Everyone with smiles on their faces
… I remember
