Year 8 Leavers' Video
Thank you to the Year 8 students (and their parents) for letting me share this part of your journey. WE ARE... TOROA!
Leavers' Speech - Thanks Xymon
Hello, everyone in the audience. My name is Xymon Ramos! A humble Year 8 Dorie School student, nominated by my charming fellow year 8’s to speak for them. Everyone who's standing in front of you right now is leaving Dorie School as year 8’s with their heads held up high. We all started out as teeny 5 year-old Piwakawaka without a care in the world - Now here we are, a little smarter, a little wiser and a little taller - Majestic Toroa ready to fly off to spread our wings at College.
Me personally - I like to try my hardest in everything I do including sports, school work and sleeping! Sometimes I play chess and I am really good at high jump. In the future I wish to become an author and create fiction books!
Elliot, always a responsible child, has wonderful friends and she remembers how enjoyable the year 7-8 camp was, especially the social interactions and the yellow sands of Butterfield Beach.
Jack, a person who has a great sense of humor...sometimes. He uses excellent vocabulary and can defend himself in all types of situations.
Jennifer, who overflows with joy, cheer, and... loudness. She will give you hugs whether you want it or not.
Josh, a subtle individual and a hard worker. He likes to see the world from a different perspective. He loves working out how things work at Manual.
JR, has memories of when we used to be in a Basketball team. His favourite phrase when things are going well is “Let’s Go!” He also has some other phrases when things are not going well, but we won’t talk about those. JR is a big cuddly teddy bear just not the cuddly part.
Liam, a lovely human-being. For some reason he creates motorbike noises from his mouth as he travels to different parts of the school or even within the classroom. Once a farmer always a farmer is our Liam.
Matthew, nice to his friends depending on his mood. He likes to say things that he thinks are right but gets corrected by Mrs.Barns. Matthew is quite clever and he likes to support others using his talents.
Ollie, he excels in his sports breaking multiple personal records. Never once did I ever hear him not play sports for a day. He is an excellent ambassador when he represents Dorie School. The three boys just mentioned also enjoy playing with snakes.
Reilly, a fascinating person that will try his hardest even when you think he’s not. While he might be a basketball star in the making, he likes to stay out of the limelight. Reilly is one of the most loyal friends you will ever find.
Rebecca, friendly all of the time. Her favourite experience at Dorie was when we went to camp this year. In Rebecca’s life she sometimes takes a right turn when everyone else goes straight through. That’s Rebecca and we love her for it.
We are future farmers, lawyers, artists, vets, hairdressers, teachers and authors. Maybe it was destiny that brought all of us here together.
Who knows! All I do know is the memories that I had here at Dorie School, I will never forget them. We are Toroa and we will always belong in Dorie.
This final sentence is a special thanks to Mrs.Barns and Mr.D
Thank you for teaching all of us, supporting us, and having our backs, throughout these years.
We are off now to see the world of college in front of our eyes.

Agricultural Day
Level 2 was not going to stop us from having a great Ag Day! We missed having Chertsey School with us this year, but will hopefully be back to shared experiences next year. We still had some wonderful sand saucers and flower arrangements. There was a lot of problem solving going on with our new display of Aqua jars - How DO you make those air bubbles go away? We had an excellent tuakana-teina experience with all ages mixing in teams to create fantastic scarecrows! After a delicious lunch, we had our Country Kids Teams activities - sack racing, horse-shoe throwing and fencing! What a great day. Thank you so much to all of the helpers and the suppliers of hay, flowers, fencing equipment and everything else we loved using. One of the wonderful things about living and working in a rural community is the parents and caregivers that give their time and effort to support us.

A “What if…” poem follows a particular formula. It gives the writer the option of short thoughts or long or showing great imagination. It can provide discussion about the difference between might, could, and would
What if I won the lotto
I might spend it on a mansion
What if I could see into the future
I could warn everyone about what might happen
What if I could teleport anywhere whenever I wanted
I would teleport to Rarotonga and I wouldn’t need to pay
What if I could breathe underwater
Olivia
What if I get stuck
I might but I wont
What if I took out a fence post
I could but I wont
What if I jack knife it
I would but I wont
What if I drive a Tractor.
Ollie
What if one day I become professionally good at sport,
I might be able to get there with hard work and determination,
What if I get horribly injured and can’t play sport,
I could get injured there’s always the risk in anything,
What if sport wasn’t competitive,
I would not want to compete anymore,
What if I love sport.
Matt
What if I could fly
I might fly to the bach
What if I could shoot 100% of my goals
I could play netball for New Zealand
What if I could invent a cure for cancer
I would give it to everybody for free
What if nobody ever got sick
Elliot
What if I drown
I might not come up
What if a shark bites my arms off
I could never surf again
What if I got pulled into some rips
I would never go back in the water again
What if I'm not scared
Jonty
What if an alien from outer space entered your house and decided to live with you?
I might ask some questions first to see if he/she is a good alien or not.
What if the world was going to end and you're the only person who can stop it?
I could try to stop the earth from ending but fail immediately.
What if your grandfather died on the farm and you're the only person left there?
I would walk to the cities to ask for some help.
What if you were low on money who's trying to pay for the treatment of your mother’s illness?
Xymon
Today's writing is an Emotion poem. Choose an emotion and describe. Here are our efforts
Excited
If excited were a colour
It would be yellow
As yellow as a daffodil
If excited were a taste
It would taste just like a fizzy lolly
If excited were a smell
It would smell as fresh as a bouquet of flowers
If excited were a sound
It would sound as sweet as a hummingbird
Elliot
Greed
If greed were a colour
It would be green
It would be as green as the bright grass in the sunny meadows
If greed were a taste
It would taste like dark green moss that’s been resting in the pond for weeks
If greed was a smell
It would smell as bad as a changing room after a rugby game
If greed was a sound
It would sound as annoying as a rooster in the early mornings
Jack
happy
If happy were a colour
It would be blue
As blue as blueberries
If happiness were a taste
It would taste just like blueberries
If the happy was a smell.
It would smell as clean as a new car
If tractor were a sound`
It would sound as loud as a lion.
Liam
Disgust
If disgust were a colour,
It would be dark green.
As green as a plant that has been darkened by its owner.
If disgust were a taste,
It would taste just like lemons with a more sour touch to it.
If disgust were a smell,
It would smell as rotten as a ageing human living his last few days.
If disgust were a sound,
It would sound as cruel as a boy who tries to gain money for the treatment of his mother’s illness
Xymon
Excitement
If Excitement was a colour
It would be orange
As orange as a sunset
If Excitement were a taste
It would taste like sweet sugar
If Excitement were a smell
I would smell as sweet sugar
If Excitement was a sound
It would sound as loud as a cheer of a crowd
Ollie
Happy
If happy were a colour
It would be yellow
As yellow as a lemon
If happiness were a taste
It would taste just like Sherbert
If happiness were a smell
It would smell as sweet as a strawberry
If happy were a sound
It would sound as noisy as a child
Olivia
Happy
If happy was a colour
It was it would be pink
as pink as a flamingo
If happy were a taste
It was a taste like just like a marshmallow
If happy were a smell
Would smell as sweet as a rose
If happy were a sound as tuneful us a bellbird
Poppy
Anger
If it was a colour it would be Boiling hot red
It’s anger and it’s red boiling hot red
As a colour it has meaning
If it was a taste it’ll be steamed, hard, and over-cooked
It would taste like meat over cooked meat
If it were a smell it’ll be smokey burnt like hair
It would smell as a marshmallow crisp and nice as it burns
If it was a sound it would loud and high pitch and annoying
It is a sound that drives you insane

TANKA POEMS
TANKA poems are like Haiku but they have a different structure. See if you can work out the syllable structure with our poems.
September 1, 1939
Listening to my
own self think about the world
and how it’ll end one day.
I heard banging on the door.
No one was here to save me.
Xymon
The sun is shining
Splash as waves come rushing by
Seagulls squawk at me
Stones skimming across water
Building huts out of driftwood
Jonty
The whistle blowing
Feeling nervous as we start
Running down the court
Taking aim to shoot a goal
Shaking hands as the game ends
Elliot
The motor roars,
Sharply turning up the jump,
The handlebars turn,
Relining the bike mid-air,
Slamming on the brakes stops me.
Matt
Tractor plowing the soft dirt
Sun shining through the windows
Seagulls crowding the dark earth
Music playing all around
Dark sky rumbles, home time.
Jennifer
Water tumbling
seagulls soaring through the sky
Blue skies sun shining
Pure white sea foam glittering
Dolphins laughing and chanting.

Poppy has used her back yard as a base for her creation. Jonty used Lego. Olivia used play dough.
What did you do in the weekend?
Cold wet rain pours down on the heavy wooly animals. Cold water hits them with a drop. The stubborn animals refuse to walk along the slippery wet road towards the green grass paddock in the distance. White miserable fog closes in on the freezing animals so that they can't see. The grass on the side of the grey road turns to mud and the heavy sheep walk across turning the grass into mud. A sheep slips and falls but still refuses to walk along on the road. The rain goes away and round the corner the sheep goes but stops. Not moving a centimeter closer but further away from the destination where we can go have a cuppa. The sheep dog barks as the other runs around like he doesn't know what to do. The sheep get a fright and start walking. Around the corner and down the road was the green grass. But the sheep stopped again. Sheep dogs barked and whined and horns beeped loudly but still nothing until the fog went away and they started to walk again. Up the road, in the gateway, and into their break of feed for the day. The gate was shut and we went back to the house for a cuppa. Liam
The wind blows past my rosy cheeks as the trees sway, rubbing against each other. Muddy puddles cover the dirt ground as we start to hear the sound of rushing water. Playful calves running around making lots of noise like they are having a sports day. Birds chirp, gliding through the trees while the bees land upon the bright coloured daffodils. I see something in the distance that looks like a mirage only to realise it is really the ocean. Running through the long wet grass I start to see the waves crashing on the stoney sand. The sun is shining and the fire is roaring. Sparks fly as we roast pink and white gooey marshmallows, chatting and laughing as the fire gets smaller and smaller. Gathering tall thick sticks, we decided to build a fort starting with the frame and then leaning more and more sticks against it until it looked complete. We gathered sparkly rocks and string to help hold and decorate the fort. Throwing rocks into the water we had a competition to see who could throw their rock the furthest and then when I was about to throw my rock we spotted a pod of dolphins splashing round. - Elliot
Vroom Vroom, as we drive out the gate. We quickly take a sharp left and drive forward and then push the clutch into 2nd gear. We go over the speed bump and around the grass roundabout. We go through the open gateway, up 200 meters, take another sharp left turn. We see something in the middle of the road. We panic, but it was just a possum. We carried on and found the gateway, down through the ditch and up to the fence. I got out and stood on the fence while Diana drove over. I let her get over the break out fence. We went to the holding fence. I let her over that. To our left we saw a cow calving and we saw her with her baby 2 legs and his face sticking out so we grabbed the ropes of the back. We got her to sit down. We put the rope around each leg of the calf then we pulled. It was a big calf so we had to put all of our muscle and weight on the rope and sure enough we pulled the calf out. He was still alive. We pulled him over to his mum’s face so she could lick him clean. We took the ropes off the calf. We scanned all of the rest of the paddock and everything seem to be fine. Hope
Arriving at the river, we took our jackets off as it was so warm. The sun was shining and we could hear the fantails chirping. We watched them fly from tree to tree.
The river was flowing fast as Dad tried to build a bridge across it. We gathered big branches and dad found a popped tyre tube. We put them across the river and the tyre started to sink as we stood on it. One of the branches was rotten so we slowly stood on it and it started cracking. Snap! as part of the branch snapped off. Bella went across and Dad helped her. The branch rolled, dad pulled Bella off the log and back on to the land. We had to find another way across. We hunted for strong logs and finally found one long enough and strong enough to get us across. One by one, with Dad's help we slowly made it across to find out that we were sinking in the mud. We tried lifting our feet and nearly lost our shoes in the mud. The mud was up to Bellas knees and nearly up to mine.I started to lean back and forward until I finally got loose and then I was finally able to help everyone. I feel very lucky to be able to have this down the road. Jonty
The endless amounts of wet barley carelessly going to waste. My eyes circle around the hollow sounding shed as the substantia of the job showed. The shovel head scooped the grain into the buckets below at a rapid pace. My skinny arms barely keep up with the weight of the buckets. I switched in buckets as they grew to full and moved them along the platform making it more efficient and effective. The large bucket sitting on the front of the tractor slowly filled. As we all grew tired, dad on the shovel kept powering on. I kept moving the buckets from next to the grain feeders to the edge of the platform so they were easier to move. My muscles grew tired and every time I had to climb over the railing it became more of a chore. The cows started wandering into the yard, to their disappointment we were in their way but we needed the job to get done. Buckets kept flowing and the side of the lane where we were dumping the worthless grain followed round the corner. The milk full cows cram into the yard. We finally get the job done and the milking starts. Matthew
The mowers spin at high speeds as it lowers closers to the long grass the tractors engines starts to heat up and the wheels roll along getting close to the fence I swerve to the left I turn past the power pole the red mower scrap the wood. The hydraulics lift the heavy mower up as its scraping the shingle flicking stone in every direction. The evenly chopped grass flicks up behind me. I slam on the brakes and turn off the mower as I finish the last strip. The radio in the tractor pumping out loud music as I drive aloug the side of the road. I stop, look for cars, and turn the steering wheel to turn around. Shingles splinters flick up behind out of the wheels. My white hand reaches for the gear stick and clicks the gear up button. As the mower starts up again and lowers. Hitting the ground it makes the tractor bounce. White birds fly past me at high speed and cars drive on past as I’m focusing on not missing a single blade of green grass. I lift the mower up for the last time and turn off the mowers. I drive into the yard and pull in the warm tractor in the shed as the rain start to fall. - Ollie

Friday 100 Word Stories
A deafening cry echoed in the mist that filled the corridor while Emily and William tried to escape. The cry got louder and louder until it just stopped. Emily and William froze in shock. All of a sudden they felt a tap on their shoulders and a sign of fear shot across their faces. They turned around, slowly realising that nobody was really there. They looked at each other in astonishment. They felt the tap again but this time they noticed a red light shining on the walls. They turned around, knowing the light was coming from below.

Faster,Faster! The kids shouted as they spun around. Pip gripped tightly on the handle as it got faster and faster. The playground became smudges of green covering Pip's eyes. Little did Pip know this ride was like no other when the ride reached top speed Pip would go to a far away land filled with colors and flowers. As the ride wouldn't go any faster Pip began to feel dizzy and her eyes spiraled at the sight of the rainbow color appearing towards her. Pip fell but didn't land. She was falling through flowers and rainbows until it came to a stop. She couldn't believe what she was seeing.

Bang the air turned black around me. Icy fingers gripped my arm and dragged me into the darkness. Thud as I get thrown down the basement stairs I get to the bottom with bruises all down my legs and try to stand but the pain causes me to collapse to the ground. I try to crawl up the stairs but when I get to the top the door gets slammed on my face. I tumble back down the stairs and hit the bottom again. I found a light switch. I flick it and then I realise this is my house.

Her voice clattered against the broken concrete as the dark sky rumbled in misery. Jessica was running as footsteps followed pouncingly as they got closer and closer. Suddenly everything was quiet, no more rumbling, no more loud echoing footsteps. All you could hear was Jessica's heart pounding in her chest. She was standing in the middle of an empty car park. The moon's light shone through all the cracks and empty spaces in the hard cement. Jessica saw a shining light in the distance. As she got closer the light began to dimmer into a lonely sparkle. The light made a ringing sound that turned into a buzz. But yet these sounds weren’t normal, they had a weird tone to them that made it impossible to understand what and where they came from. The lonely sparkle turned into a white flame that exploded with blue specks of darkness.
Jessica’s blue eyes were astonished by amazement, she had never seen anything like it. She was in a gaze as a little tiny sunset pink creature appeared from behind it. As the creature appeared the sky began to shatter with different colored shooting stars. The lights in the sky began to crystalize into a million pieces of glass.

I am passionate and positive
I wonder what my future will be like and what the future holds
I see that everyone is changing
I want the world to be a happy place and I want everyone to be treated equally
I am passionate and positive
I understand that everything doesn't always go your own way
I say that people will come and go
I dream of hopefully being in the silver ferns
I try my best in everything I do and be nice to everyone
I hope one day that everyone gets what they deserve and there will be no bullying
I am passionate and positive
I am hidden and silent like a whisper can be.
I wonder when the world will fall.
I hear a quiet mutter from the person who's inside me.
I see the Earth’s land so beautiful and clear.
I want to have freedom to explore the world.
I am hidden and silent like a whisper can be.
I understand that all humans will disappear one day.
I say for people to be who they are.
I dream of someday finding that one place that you’d call paradise.
I try to understand why people do such horrible things.
I hope I can become the person who you look up to.
I am hidden and silent like a whisper can be.

Working From Home - 18-20 August 2021
Toroa has been working hard at home and online while we stay home safe in our bubbles.
Here are a few pieces of work
Matt's 100 Word Story - 100 word stories encourage the students to think hard about the perfect words to use.
The bulging eyes of the reptile peer above the murky water as a long rat sits by the lake edge. The scaled water animal slowly becomes closer to the small mammal and inches away. Now the croc launches! Gnarly teeth of the jaw snap down on the rat. He tosses and turns as the slimy meal slides down his throat. The freshwater crocodile retracts back into the depths of the lake. He knew this wasn’t enough to fill him. The search carried on. Lurking in the distance was a small school of fish. This thrill put him into attack mode.
Trisha's 100 Word Story
Her emerald eyes tear up as she sits next to the freshly disturbed soil of her dog’s grave. Hailey softly speaks to “herself In another life” with several tears rolling down her face. She places the roses on Rocky's grave and pulls her hair off her face and tucks it behind her ear. She blanks out and thinks back to when she first got him... “Happy birthday!” her mother yelled handing a box to Hailey. Hailey slowly pulled the bright blue ribbon and out jumped Rocky. Hailey started crying. She had always wanted a dog and she finally had one.
Cerys's 100 Word (or a few more) Story
George lived in a timeline where covid was a destroyer.
He thought he was safe in his little house on the West Coast..no bugs, no sniffles, but little did he know what was about to happen. Now George was a very distrustful person if you told him something and he didn't think it's true he would keep thinking that way for a long time. One morning he awoke to find his throat was sore and he had a bad cough Late in the afternoon it got worse and George decided to go and get tested. After the monster nurse was done with his nose George went to the dairy and got himself an ice cream as a “you did a good job” sort of treat.A week later got his results...positive.
" WHAT!” he yelled at the top of his lungs.
The doctor tried to calm him down with a lollipop, which he took and then ran away. Eventually everyone in New Zealand had it but the twist was George gave so much of his covid to everyone else he didn't have it anymore!

ANZAC Writing
The Perfect Place to Start
We will miss them all so much.
The dads who went to war
The husbands who fought for us
It leaves the heart so sore.
We want them all back.
We miss their chatter and support
Those men that walked so tall.
They died so you and I could live so free
On ANZAC day we will remember
They are always in our hearts
Living how they would want us to
Is the perfect place to start.

Fight for Peace
Friends drop, and lay dead at your feet
The fresh smell of blood
No Mercy in ‘No Man’s Land’
Making friends just to lose more
Noise of gunshots everywhere
The desperate cry for life
Now this is war
- Kane
The Gift
Walking through the graveyard.
Passing all the warriors
Who gave their lives for us.
A single tear falls onto the petals of a poppy
She held her head up as she looked at his grave
Her knees fell to the ground, memories flooding in
The next morning at the dawn service
She sobbed giving her speech
“May our loved ones rest in the clouds”

True pain.
Shiver shiver the yellow note in caps
TELEGRAM in my hand.
Tears drip down slowly like my happiness.
It feels as if I was being stabbed.
Quickly opening it.
My mind scatters.
I lost my heart and my son I feel helpless losing all hope I am truly dead inside.

Moments In Time
It looked scary as the waves were crashing. I took a big breath. I started paddling. I heard people leaving. I got happy until I saw someone fall off. I was too focused. I looked and an enormous wave crashed into me pulling me down. I was thinking “Wow this is embarrassing!”
When it stopped I got up and I was at the shallow part. I breathed and laughed and heaps of my classmates were standing up. I had the determination. I was just thinking of my face when I fell. I laughed again and started pushing my surfboard. First I jumped over some waves. I counted the waves 1..2..3 until the fourth wave came to a major wave. I said “1,2,3!” I got on my knees. I stood up it was like rugby again. I lost my balance
The kids fell silent. I started wobbling. I got knocked down and fell. My face was so scared. I heard yelling. I looked up and I was going straight into Hope. I knocked into Hope and I flipped into the water, screaming. I laughed a little and nose-dived into shallow water. I hit my back into the sand. It hurt my back and I just smiled and laughed.

Running across the boats having the best time of my life. Thinking not about anything except what kind of jump I’m going to do. But when I get to the end of the last boat I jump holding my legs and pull a front flip into the cold green water over my head. I came up out of the water. Weeds love my feet that have the ground. I’m having another turn .

Sliding into the blue ocean with strong steady waves splashing my face, the strong wind about to pounce. Slipping onto my surfboard, I feel a wave coming. Carefully I start to paddle sweeping my board away. I stand up carefully. The swishy wave still pushes me along. Soon I ended up on the sand. The fins of my board get stuck in the soft watery sand. I jump off with a splash. Drips land on my face. I went back in the water like lightning. Still hanging on to my surfboard this massive wave comes. The water was up to waist height so I knew it was going to hit my face. I jumped on to my board as quickly as I possibly could. It drags me away and soon I was near shore still hanging on. I fall off with a splat.
· Millie
Before the wave hits me I start to paddle my way forward getting ready to stand up. The biggest wave hits and tilts me but I keep my balance and steer my way into the shore. Bang! I crash into another person and fall off and get hit by a surfboard. Pain is going through my body and I start to panic. I feel the board fins hit my back and I smack the bottom of the ground and sit up feeling like I just vomited. Feeling terrible I stay determined and get back out on my board and catch many more waves. I stand up on my board and paddle many times.
The ocean waves crash down and the water starts to foam into white bubbles. The waves start to barrel and the pro big-wave-surfers get smoked by massive waves. The ocean starts to flare up bigger and bigger until we had to get out of the water. We all jumped out. Harry just told us we had to just move towards the left. I started to paddle out fast to get smoked by many waves.
-Hope
Walking with my board towards the ocean in excitement to dive my board in and get on a wave. Surfing wasn't as easy as I thought the first time I went. I fell face forward and drank a mouthful of salt water. Blah! It was horrible. I can still taste it. I couldn't get up on my surf board so I kept trying and finally got it when I finally got it. I was excited but I struggled to keep stable and had to try not to put my foot on one side of the board or I would fall when I finally got the hang of it. I crashed into Jonty by accident but we both got washed under our surfboards in a second but luckily we both were ok. The waves would take you to the other side because of the riptide and when we kept getting swept away the instructors would keep on signalling to come this way so we wouldn't go all the way to where the rips are and get swept away and be lost at sea. None of us did because we had amazing instructors and I would do it again if I could. I really enjoyed it.
-Trisha
Waves break in front of me. As the crush of water start hurtling towards me, my arms glide through the salty liquid and my feet dangle off the end of the foam board. The board glides across the water as I bring my legs up and twist my body. I’m instantly up. Happiness runs through my body. The surge of water starts to push closer to shore as I start to lose my balance. I recenter my feet to the middle of the board. My head twists around looking at where I started. I come to a complete stop and lean backwards. Splash I feel a sharp pain on my back the water runs through my strands of hair. I plant my feet on the sea ground and lift my head out of the water. I wipe the liquid off my eyes and see a board flying towards me. I dunk my back down into the water and cross my fingers and hope that I don’t get pummelled by them.
-Ollie
As the rising set comes into view. Smash!! The power of the force of the swell pounded into the disturbed sea of aqua. Abruptly the whitewash of the incoming wave hits, feet dangling off the end of the board my toes touch the surface of the water. My arms hit the water taking 3 strokes each, propelling me further. Hands both planted on the face of the board. My biceps and triceps tense and I push myself off the platform of the foam and plastic board and sit on my knees while gliding in towards shore. My left foot plants down on the foam wave-rider and my back foot steadies towards the back. Squatting, a rush of relief flushes my mind. Salt droplets skid out from underneath the board spraying into my eyes like the sting of a deadly wasp. I clear my eyes by blinking a little. The surge of water ends and I bear off the board and splash into the vast sea of water. I scramble to my feet, water tumbling around my thighs and below. As I mellow in the marine H2O another incoming wave rolls over the water smoothly. I paddle back out to where the waves break and another set loiters in the distance.
-Matthew
Jumping up on my board, I glide on the water picking up speed. Splash! As I jump into the water my feet hit the bottom slowly sinking into the sand. Walking out again to waist height I look around for great waves to ride. “This one’s good!” I think. My arms glide through the water as the wave gets closer and closer. The wave hits the back of the board. I slowly stood up on my board. Splash! As I fell into the water I swallowed a mouthful of water. I came up and started coughing. The surf teachers came over and said “Are you okay?”
I said “Yes” and carried on surfing. Here comes a giant wave the waves pushed me to shore.
-Jonty
Crash the waves crash on top of me as I sink into the water. The waves sizzle with bubbles as I leaped out of the wave pushing me out into the open. I'm still on my stomach waiting for the best time to pop to my feet. The waves are cold like a raindrop spinning onto my forehead as I spin out of control. I put my first foot on the board then my second. I stood for 10 seconds, then a wave hit me from behind. I slipped and slowly fell and backslapped into the sandy water hitting my back on the wet sand below. As I'm in the water the board drags me towards the surface.

Antarctica centre
Entering the building with hope deep at the bottom of my heart I was bracing myself for the icy celebration waiting for me. All the year 6’s,7’s,8’s and the parents and the staff got greeted by someone named Gabriel “Hello, Dorie School. I am Gabriel I will be giving you the tour of our place. Please when we go past the theatre, don’t watch we’ll get there in the end” She turned her back and walked. We followed into a room with photos on the wall and a table with balloons. All of Toroa placed their bags down leaning against the wall. Gabriel chirped “Follow me.” One by one we followed. We passed some huskies. From around from the group were sighs of “Awh!”
“They are so CUTE!” and it repeated until we got past.
We went through a door into the next room it had many facts and games and more. Gabriel said with a big howling voice introducing us in “Welcome to the Antarctic class.” After a while of talking she asked my friend in a nice rising voice “Do you want to dress up as a person going to Antarctica?” He answered in a voice that you could tell he was excited “Yes!” Zip! Strap! Soon he was in 6 or 7 layers of clothes. Gabriel asked “Is it hot in there?”
He replied in a sighing voice “It's boiling in here.”
After a while when Kane was out of his 6 layer clothing we went to a new room. I think we went to the 4D theatre. We went down the narrow hall feeling like as if it was crouching down to us. We got into the 4D theatre. We had glasses on it was like we were in VR. It started wind and water jumped at our faces like they were jump scares from a horror game. Spit! Spit! Whoosh! Wmph! From the roof tiny specks of water I think it was meant to be or snow. Then bubbles came. It was thrilling. Soon we put on our jackets and went to the cold room. We put on some black plastic tarp things on our feet. Gabriel signalled to us “The snow is hard so please no snow ball fights”. Us kids braced ourselves for the cold room. We opened the door. We played around. Soon the lights went darker. They went purple the wind went faster and it was the storm. My hair moved with the wind. After about 2 minutes in there we got out. As we went through the door our voices echoed saying: “That was amazing! “I-it was so cold!”
We made it outside and we ate lunch and talked. After we were done we had to go to a snow truck they used to use in the 1900’s I think. We got in it was bumpy. One of my cousin’s put her seat belt right in time when we went to the big bump and more and more the first one gave me a fright. My teacher tried not to squash me or my classmate. Then after the snow trucks we went to the penguins. We saw them swim and twirl through the water. We patted a stuffed penguin. Gabriel alarmed us with saying “We can’t pat real penguins. If we did we could be bit and their bites are nasty! They twist and pull one of our workers to get stitches.” We learnt about them and I learnt that how many types of there are penguins I think it was:17 or 18.
The leaf-green kayak drifts across the dark dirty lake. The waves look identical to the flat water in a kid’s picture book. The splashing of the paddles plummeting into the contained space can be heard from a distance. Yells of joy can be heard from afar. Music fills the peaceful air. People fling their bodies into the humungous body of liquid causing water to jump out of their lake, quickly cannon-balling their way back down. As my head rests on the hard plastic boat, the sun sends beams of scorching heat to my face. The depths of the water drag my small vessel around as my body lays dormant.
-Jack
Crash! Salt water floods my mouth as a tsunami of waves collide with me and my surfboard. Velcro tears as my leg rope slides off. Crack! I nose-dive while sets of water gush over me. I tumble and barrel through the light blue, salt-filled bay.

Abruptly, I shot up like a bullet on the bright pink surfboard. As I pick up speed light blue and white waves crash all around me, forcing people to fall off. The wind blows past my wet sunburnt face. Wiping my eyes I felt my board start to wobble. Splash! I tumbled off my board and into the salty water. I swallowed a mouthful as I came up to take a breath. I felt the heat reflect onto my face.

Entering the ocean with a grin on my face. As the wave tumbled and crashed down around my thighs, a humongous wave came flying towards me. I swung my leg on the back of the surfboard. Pushing the surfboard into the sea. Cutting through the waves with fear. As I saw a wave hedging my way I quickly jumped on my surfboard and Harry gave me a push so I could catch the wave.

As the water swished and the sun shone, the wind blew past my red sunburnt face. I shot up like a bullet in a barrel hurrying to be free. Water splashing all around me, my surfboard came crashing down as I nose-dived into the cold salty ocean as the water went up through my nose and came out of my mouth. My cherry red face screwed up like a sour gummy in my mouth. The taste was stuck to my tongue like slime on a hot day. Abruptly a surfboard came rushing for me like a shark hungry for his feast. My mind went blank and my whole body froze like a cold ice block coming out of the freezer. The surfboard swerved as I ducked under the icy water a shiver went down my spine as the water hit my face.

Mellowing waves lingered off shore while seagulls twirled around a tree intensely. A boat sped through the waves and led itself free from the disastrous torrent. Thrusting myself towards the raging Moana a wave strikes hard at my chest beating me into a crisp. I rest the surfboard on top of the water. “It's time” I thought while dipping my hands inside the liquid saltwater paddling endlessly. Instantaneously a burst of water lifted me up legs on head level eyes facing straight.
“Do the thing! Do the thing! Do the thing!!” I shrieked out loud waiting for the right moment to occur. “Now!!” Chicken wings, seal, knees, then twist.
A bead of sweat rolls down the side of my forehead as people hoorayed for my success. “I did it! I’m standing on the surfboard!” My eyes popped out realizing that I was suddenly choking from lack of oxygen. Blasting upwards breaking the liquid surface a gasp of air I desired. My face painted a grin and laughed heroically like I had just beaten the last boss.

Humungous waves were crashing over me as I tried to hop on my surfboard without falling on the solid sand. Trying again pushing my surfboard through the waves and bouncing on my board trying to stand and….. I fell, going under my board and suffocating from having no air and salty water getting in my mouth, having trouble getting out of under my surfboard so scary I almost drowned.

Abruptly, the light blue waves splash on the shore as if someone had just tipped over a glass of water. My surfboard jumped out at me as I went over the gigantic wave. Salty water splashed in my face like a waterfall. My hair flipped in the air with water flying everywhere. I was ready! We were going to get this wave. Paddle! Paddle! PADDLE! My arms glided through the water. My right leg goes up and so does my left one. I got my balance and soon enough I was up. A huge silly grin spread across my face. My mind was blank, all I was thinking was balance. The surfboard was shaking and my feet were shivering. Splash! The squishy, smoothing sand touched my feet like a feather. I had finally stood up properly. My surfboard spun around, eager to go again. Rubbing against my neck was my wetsuit as I ran up to the next wave.

Entering the ocean with a grin on my face, I started pushing the surfboard out, cutting through all the waves. A humongous wave came flying towards me. Swinging my legs on to the back of the surfboard, the Instructor gave me a little push. Sliding up to my knees, slowly standing. I'm doing it, I'm doing it! 2 seconds later, my classmate was in my way. I was surfing at flying speed. BANG! Smack! “Ahh” I screamed as the surfboard jumped on me. My ankle connected with the surfboard. The wave start to push the surfboard into shore, dragging me behind. At last I jumped on my feet and water poured off me like a waterfall.

Waves smash at the ground in front of me. A whopping wave comes up behind. My hands dive into the water, paddling along, scooping water one by one. The salty water hits my feet and the water picks me up with a splash. I start to move at speed trying to get up on my feet. Salt water runs along the side of my board. I manoeuvre to my feet stumbling around the deck. The water was as fast as a boat racing around making me fall off. After I get to my feet, I stumble to the surfing position. I saw along like a plane cruising through the air. Just as I get to the end of the wave I step off and go back and do it again.
WOOSH! While the water collides and slowly forms into a wave I glide onto my board. I place my feet at the tail. The wave is getting closer and closer. BAM my friend glides away, riding the wave like a pro. I paddle 1..2...3! My surfboard flies up like a plane and overcomes the wave. I leap into the position. I start to wobble then gain back my balance. My foot swings in front of my board and I turn to see the wave is about to kick me off my surfboard. I fling my body up and turn. I was standing on my surfboard for the first time then pulled the shaka sign to my instructors and they raised their hands and did it back. I heard my friends cheering me on as I jump off my board and fall into the water.

Growling filled the sky as a machine, glided through the air. My eyes fluttered as I listened to the whispering of the children around me. The wind crept around as dragons filled the silent night with racket. Lying down on my stretcher cuddling my sleeping bag to try to keep warm. Shivers shuttled up my spin like a taser shocking me. Wiggling to keep my toes warm so they don’t freeze, while foot prints broke the silence. Kids rustling around in their sleeping bags to try not to get in trouble. Growling make kids fall silent.

Lining up. Watching the line go down and down. Oh no it’s my mum’s turn. As she dawdles across the upside down boats, she gets to the last one and falls down backwards. Now it’s my turn I run as fast as I can. I do a front flip off the last boat. I’m totally doing that again. It’s my turn again and this time I’m doing it with Hope. Hope goes first.
