Big Day Out 2020
What an Amazing Day!
Dorie School students stretched their brains at Escape Artists. They faced frustration and experienced jubilation as they solved clues. Subway at Margaret Mahy Playground was a fantastic addition to the day. After that, everyone challenged themselves at Clip n Climb. So many racing pulses! I was proud of every single one of you. What a great day! Thanks to the parents who came to support and thanks to the students for being amazing!

While the seniors are away...
On Thursdays for the rest of term 3 and most of term 4, the Year 7/8s go to technology. That leaves the Year 6s with the run of the place! Mrs Barns set us a teamwork challenge. We had to bake muffins using only one hand each! Then we had to clean up the same way. Wow! We had some trouble before we worked out the best ways to work together.
111 Emergency!
Shayne from St John came to visit to teach us all sort of emergency medical situations. Later we had a visit from the Rakaia Fire Service to tell us to get down, get low and get out!
Antarctica!
Our teacher used Antarctica as a provocation for us to do a passion project about something that caught our interest. We had Aurora Australis art, model icebreakers, papier mache frostbitten hands, new protective gear, and diorama predictions of what Antarctica would look like in a million years (amongst other things)
We also went to the Canterbury Museum to find out more about the first explorers.

Tuakana - teina relationship
3...2...1....Lift off!
A NASA educator came to visit today and she brought out space-suits for us to wear! She talked about what astronauts do in space and how they live on the space station. Some of us were interested in how the astronauts use the toilet when they're in space. Some of us were interested in what the astronauts ate and how they cooked their food.
Pyramid Scheme!
We are working on teamwork and building trust. We are also discovering how triangles are the strongest structures
Buddy reading - Tuakana - teina relationship
We love getting together with the younger students in our school. It helps them to settle and make relationships with us. It helps us to have empathy and compassion. We are role models and we love to help them out.
Camp! Mt Hutt Retreat
This year Toroa traveled to Mt Hutt Retreat for our camp. We hiked, abseiled, slid on the water slide, had a camp fire, built our confidence and had some great laughs. Thanks to Greg at Mt Hutt Retreat for looking after us. We have written some snapshots of what we did. There will be photos added soon.
As grey pebbles stood down below me, a steady hill wielding its sick motions stared creepily like it was the boss of this town. Then it happened, I just couldn’t resist. WEEEE! All of a sudden my heart overflowed with happiness, swelling happily through my torso. At that time sickness choked me while I collided with the compacted dirt face to face. Spinning, rolling! I couldn’t think of anything right now. My head twisted deep into dreamland while cartoon birds suddenly flew around me giving me a look that seemed no good. I traveled down the mountain at leopard speed crushing my bones as pain entered my body. CRASH! While I looked at the blueish outrageous sky above me, I thought it looked gorgeous but I knew that it was finally over. So I went again. Xymon
Sunny. Under the hot blazing sun, I was sweating from the heat. Luckily there was a freezing cold breeze. Hopping on the bike and waiting for the teacher and going down and speeding. I pulled the back break for slowing down, I didn’t know that it would skid. When we got to the first gate we had to wait for the other people. Diana's chain fell off. Vickie tried to get Chloe to do the track but she couldn’t do it because she was scared. Then when the other people got there we continued going to the next gate and then waited again for Mr.D and the others. We went on the next one and the next one was the last gate which led to the road so we had to do a single file because it was the road! We reached the station and stopped for a two minute break and went around the building two to three times. We were super tired and decided to just walk but I got back on my bike.

As the fire lights up like a hundred fireflies, my squishy marshmallow skims above the flame. It's slowly goes a nice golden brown. I turn my head to talk to my friend. When I turn back to check my marshmallow it was on fire. I blow the fire out. There is sugary charcoal on the outside of my marshmallow but when I peeled it off, the inside of the marshmallow was a sticky glop. When it enters my mouth it's all sticky I can barely open up my mouth it tastes like a hundred dollars. - Josh
My heart beat like a drum out of my chest as I approached the front of the line. I was standing in the line watching people lower themselves back off the rough peak. Click! The rope attached to my harness and I clung to the black rope. I thought to myself ‘I’m ready’ as I scuffed my feet back to the edge of the cliff. Adrenaline kicked in as I leaned over edge trusting the rope to hold me. Greg told me to leisurely walk off the rocky edge. I took a few steps backward over the cliff. My dirty shoe slipped. I dangled on one foot. I carried on down. I approached and smacked my head on a black tree as my feet touched the ground. I thought the rope was going to snap.

As I turned off the safety ready to shoot, ping went the gun. I was looking at the target hoping that I got a bullseye. Hearing the bullet fired out of the gun I felt the gun jump.
Crack! The gun broke into two reloading for my second shot smelling the gunpowder flying out of the gun. I was about to take my second shot. I saw the pellet of Matt's gun hit the ground seeing the smoke come out of the end of the barrel. I steadied my breath so I could take the shot. I pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I saw the safety and realized that I left the safety on. Click I pushed it in. Bang went my second shot. I put the gun down on the ground then Mr. D said “Go and get your target.” - Izrael
Heart pounding thoughts rush through my head. Are the ropes going to be strong enough to hold me? Nervously, I lean back over the edge wondering what was going to happen. Slowly I let the colored string slide through my shaking hands making me lean further and further over the edge. My feet smacked against the rocky cliff as I climbed my way down. Gradually my friends disappeared out of sight as I descended below the clifftop.
Two minutes ago my harness was strapped on. My bright blue helmet was tight and I was anxiously waiting in the line for my go. I could hear bees and wasps swarming around the black trees and nervous chattering boys talking about how they weren’t scared ... while shaking in their boots.

Skrr! The back wheel kicked up dust as I slid across the shingle road. Bits of the black rubber tyre flicked up into the boiling hot air. I crunched on the metal brakes as hard as I could. I skidded around the corner nearly hitting the person that tracked behind me. I slipped on a big trench-like pile of stones, sliding, just about falling off.

As I fly down the waterslide, soap goes in my eyes and mouth. Screaming with excitement and fear I was so happy. Water flies everywhere. The water is cold on my back and tummy. Ollie, Mattew, Thomas, Liam, Ivan went inside a had a shower 20 minutes later they came back out to watch us, Ollie, Mattew, Thomas, Liam, Ivan saw us going in threes went we are only meant to go in twos so Ollie, Mattew, Thomas, Liam, Ivan they ran inside and whipped on their togs and ran back out on the slide we did trains with people it was really fun.

Woosh!! As I fly down the black slippery slide, the long wide mat burns my precious skin. I start picking up incredible speed as I zip side to side and crash into the rock solid tyres, that immediately gives me trillions of dark purple bruises which burst with pain. Water flies over my head creating a huge splash. The freezing water flings up my wide open eyes blinding me from my vision. A bundle of bubbly slimy soap fires down my throat that is suddenly stinging. I attempted to stand up on the slippery mat but I slipped over on the slimy bubbles and landed on a sore butt. I hop off the slide looking at my bright red tummy thinking to myself, I’m gonna do it again.

Watching the other kids leaning backwards over the rocky cliff, my heart speeds up. I get closer and closer to the edge. I walk forward one more step and click a rope to my harness. I turn around and put my hands on the rope. Walking back to the rocky edge. My dry mouth makes me swallow lots. Thinking how far back I need to walk so that I don’t fall and go splat, and how far down. The sound of Mrs Barns talking to me that helps nothing. My heart rate speeds up thumping like a drum. Leaning over the ledge and, start walking runs though my gear. Traipsing slowly down letting the rope run though my hand. I looked down but saw a tree nearly touching my nose. I got to the ground and felt so amazed!

Bang! I hit the can! As I loaded the next bullet, adrenaline shook my body. I felt my heart pumping, blood going through my veins. I see targets with holes in them from speeding bullets. I can feel small bullets with sharp edges that could break a window in one shot. I could smell the fresh smoke from the gun. BANG! I hit the target. I quietly did a victory dance then I loaded the next one. I heard the loud bang of the massive gun that was sitting in front of me. I pulled the trigger suddenly the speedy bullet shot through the forest never to return again.

As Diana looked at me with pure evil in her eyes a smirk laid across her face.
Jason said “3..2..1.. GO.’’ Diana darted off with me following behind she grasped my foot and dragged me along the water slide. As I screamed, she launched me forward.
“We are going to hit the tyre,’’ said Diana. We tried hard not to hit the tyre, and closed our eyes as we crashed.
Mr D laughed as we said “Oww.’’

As I’m walking up the hill I can see the beautiful view. I was puffing and sweaty all over my body dripping down my chin. I had a red face and sore feet it was so painful. I had tingling cheeks. We had to walk up and down the steep path. My mouth was dry. As soon as I was the step path I was like there is no way I could go down without slipping. When I came running down the path I couldn't stop so I decided to whack my face into a tree. That really hurt.

As I get the gear on to go down the cliff backwards the instructor puts a lot of ropes and clips on me. The main part was the rope and the figure 8. I slowly walk backwards. I took a couple more steps. I could go I walk down slowly until I got to the bottom. As I was heading to the bottom, some dusty dirt started falling. The hardest part was walking to the top of the cliff again. I got the harness back on. Everyone helped me... Ziiip ... it was back on me, nice and firm. The instructor opened the rope to let me onto the edge. He secured me to the rope. I jumped down the cliff like a monkey -

Ping went the bullet as it hit the target. My hand was shaking as I turned on the safety. I put my finger on the trigger and aimed down the sight. Adrenaline kicked in as I shot the target. I hit the side of the target. I started reloading my gun and put my next shot in. Click, now I am ready to shoot. Boom! I hit the back metal can that was standing at the back.

Nervously I wait in line for my go. Clink goes the air rifle as I load it up. I turn off the safety button, line up the green and the red, I get ready and fire. I snap the gun and reload as quickly as possible so I could have another turn. My first time I got it in the tree so this time I want to get a bullseye. I fire. I get a bullseye! I was so proud of myself.-Jennifer
Warm water filled my hands like I had turned a tap on and put my hands under. This made my grip loosen as I tried to hold on tighter to the person's hand next to me. Suddenly I lost my grip of the hand I was holding. I had to quickly wipe my hand on my shorts and grabbed the hand again. The lovely large leaves were bright green and swayed gently in the light breeze. The ferns made the outdoors feel very peaceful and safe. I could have easily taken a nap amongst them.
There were poles pointing up out of the ground They made tall and skinny wooden platforms spread apart so we had to push ourselves to reach the next. The platform was hardly wide enough to put two feet on. Stepping from platform to platform was more of a leap for me. I had to concentrate on where I was putting my feet so as not to lose my footing. At one stage my foot nearly missed the platform but luckily I balanced myself so I didn’t fall off. People encouraged me with kind words like you can do it, you are making this look easy, trust yourself, I know you can do it. The encouraging words that they were saying didn’t help, they just made me stand still and get more nervous. I need to relax and believe what the people are saying.
My heart pounds out of my chest like the beat of the drum getting quicker and quicker. As I move from platform to platform my heart beats fast, and slows down when I step onto the next platform. Once I had two feet back on the ground, my heart returned to its normal beat. I was very proud of myself when I had finished. I have overcome some of my fears. Hopefully next time I do something like this it will be easier.

I slowly step up to the mat preparing to push myself off. I tense my legs as I wait to hear the word “GO!” I shove myself off the mat onto the slippery tarp. I slide down the slope on my stomach gathering pace as I head down. I put my hands behind my back and I lift my feet off the ground hoping to make myself more aerodynamic. I get to the hill with as much speed as possible. Me, Ollie, Liam, Matt, and Ivan line up in formation while on a mission to the end. I rush through some piled water filled with soap that stings my eyes as it splashes into them. I consciously blink trying to wash the pain out. The end was in sight but I had lost most of my pace. I was desperate to get to the end. I was about to come to a halt when I shout out to Liam “Push me!”. Liam gives me the final push that gets me to the end. I jump onto my feet and celebrate that we had been the first people to get someone to the edge of the mat.

Staring at the colourful target, aiming carefully. Tugging at the string making the bow sturdy. Looking at the middle stand that was holding the bows. Next to it, a chemical carton holding the arrows. Right behind you, two huge tractor wheels people sit on to wait for their turn. The sun reflected off the colourful bale. See the sun reflecting off the metal nose.
Hear a buzzing sound surrounding your face. The sound was coming from a little ball of fluff. It had black and yellow stripes. Hear the arrow crashing into the bale making a crunching sound. Hear the bulls next door in the paddock. Hear them calling out to their friends further away. Hear the birds chirping in the breeze from a nearby park.
Hold the bowstring. Release it. Feel the bowstring scraping across your arm leaving a big scrape turning into a bruise. Put down the budget to collect all the arrows. Feel a sharp pain. Something stuck in your hand. Look down. A bee just stung you. Start shaking your hand. Watch as your hand gets larger and larger. Try putting it into a sling.

My brain runs through the worst of what could happen. The thought sends shivers down my spine. My mind sets back to the glory land, not death land. Mr.D said that some drops that looked like water on the side of some trees were called Honeydew.
My legs wobble, my heart pounds out of my chest like a raging bull in a cage. I freak out as I stare down the vertical cliff. The instructor, Greg clips a figure 8 piece to my harness. I shuffle back onto the edge, I perched my feet on the sharp edge of the cliff. I lean back over the jagged towering rock. I start to drag my feet back down the solid rock face. My heart settles as I improve, increasing my speed and my confidence. My feet adjust back onto the flat land at the end of the abseil. I have a deep sigh of relief.
When I got back up to the top of the peak Mr.D told the group what honeydew really was…. Aphid poo. Aphids are bugs that eat sap and the liquidy substance the poop out tastes a lot like honey.

Unfortunately Azaria missed out on camp but filled us in on what she had been doing while we were away.
As the scary beast stood over me I peered around the corner of the hospital bed and saw the needle. The needle was a skinny little piece of metal. The doctor flicked his gloves against his wrist. He looked at me and smirked it won’t hurt he said. I felt a jabbing pain in my arm and before I could see ouch I was seeing double. My eyes flickered closed and 1 minute later I was away. The shining light felt like I was almost as close to the sun and mercury. I lay in my uncomfortable bed for a second and tried to turn around. Something pulled me down. I tried to move my legs and I couldn't feel them. Had my legs been chopped off. I screamed for mum “Mum my legs are gone”. My mother looked at me as if i was crazy “Your legs aren’t gone, stupid” she pulled the white cover off my legs. I start laughing. I couldn’t stop. The tall hairy man came in and looked over me and smiled at my mother “The surgery was very successful, She will be walking around soon”. I looked at the doctor and mumbled “what surgery”. The room was then filled with laughter.
