Year 8 Leavers
Sad to see these amazing students go! We wish you all the very best!
Year 7/8 Camp Omaka 2019 Woohoo!
In week 6 the Year 7/8s raced off to Christchurch for their camp. They had spent two hard years fundraising and planning to get there. We all had an excellent time and came home very tired. We did some fabulous learning about grocery shopping and food budgeting – apparently you can’t feed 16 people lunch for two days with only 6 bread rolls. We learnt about cooking times and how difficult it is to get different foods ready at the same time. We learnt that taco boats should NOT stay in the microwave for two minutes. We learnt a lot about working together and looking after each other when we’re tired. The Year 7/8s would like to thank Mrs Barns for her encouragement towards our independence, celebrating our successes, and pushing us towards our goals; Mr D for supporting our endeavours; Mrs Easton (Anna) and Mrs Williams (Megan) for joining in the activities and supporting our efforts. What a great camp!
I te whenua o te pereti
We have been studying I te whenua o te pereti - or from paddock to plate. We have been finding out about where our food comes from and what the processes are that get the food to us. We have discussed what makes food bigger, or better and what bi-products, and waste products are. We discovered that our food has not always looked the way it looks now. There are some photos below from us following a process to extract DNA from bananas. There are also youtube clips to showcase some of our findings.
Teamwork with newspaper!
We worked together to make newspaper treads, to work in the same way as tread on a tank. We had to take our time and work together. One team did a great job and made it all the way down to the end of the tennis court and back. Another team had a technical error, but still managed to complete the race. That's perseverance!
Miscellaneous
There are a range of activities we have been working on this term. We've also had ski day and other visits.
EPRO8 Competition!
We managed the TOP 3 so will be moving on to the next stage of the competition! What an excellent day. It was so exciting. Our teams all did themselves proud. Our second Year 6 team was just beaten in the last 30 seconds! Thanks so much to the parents for transporting the kids and sending me updates!
UPDATE: At the next stage of the competition the team was cursed by a wobbly banana so narrowly missed out on a visit to the University of Canterbury Engineering Department for the next stage. We are excited to compete again next year!

Visit to Technology
The Year 6s are excited about going to Technology next year, We went to visit our Year 7/8s to see what they have been up to. We were lucky enough to visit on a rocket flying day. Thanks Joyce and Liam for letting up hang-out and fly some rockets!
Swimming
Every year, we have swimming lessons in Ashburton. We also do some boat safety. This is always hilarious. We love it.
EPRO 8 Practice
We are going to enter the EPRO8 Competition this year. This is where teams compete against other schools in a range of Technology based activities. You are allocated points for different components and are under time pressure. We are working together to find out which students will form our teams. We had a great time and at the end end o our practices we had to evaluate our team members to see who came out as a leader in this activity, an ideas person, or a supporter, or maybe even a waster of resources!
Art Gallery
We had a visit to the Ashburton Art Gallery. We had a great time making pin-hole cameras and checking out the art. We had some gorgeous models to practice our sketching.
Year 7/8 Leaders' Day!
Our Year 7/8s spending some quality time with other 7/8s from around the area.
Year 6 Sock Monkeys!
While the cats are away the mice do science badges
Toroa is made up of Years 6-8. During Terms 1 and 2, the Year 7/8s go to Technology. The Year 6s have been using this time to work on (and some to complete) The Advanced Science Explorer Badge.
Toroa Camp in Dunedin
Hands-On Maths |
Toroa have been learning about measurement. We are measuring the length of our paces and then comparing them to our heights. We have drawn scatter graphs to share the information. We have also measured our running paces and compared those. After that we used our skills for activities such as finding the volume of the pool, working out how much space is dedicated to sport and seeing if we are SQUARE people (heights = fingertip/fingertip).
