Toroa is working on some fantastic poetry this term.  So far we have done some Haiku.  We went into our native garden and listened, looked, smelt, and touched. Have a read and comment what you think :D
Wind blowing softly
Birds sing and dance in the breeze
Trees sway side to side
Sasha

Birds flying around
The breeze mixing the calm scent
Different coloured leaves
Daniel

- Chattin’ Fantails
Chatting Birds flying,
Going across the blue sky.
Seeya small fantails
Sam Kingsbury

Bushes are waving
The birds are chirping loudly
Small trees are growing
Jaydyn

Weeds everywhere growing
The fresh grass filled the air
I heard stones crunching
Bradley

While tiny leaves shiver
Stones crunch into the hard ground
The fresh cold open wind
Freedom

Pine scents flows through air
Hard smooth rocks crunch together
Flowers are blooming.
Jazzy

Green flaxes dancing
While birds glide and chirp away
Bees Buzz quietly
Pippo

They are rising tall
Motions in the horizon
They are super cool
Oliver jack

Bees buzz  frightened me
Huge stones tripped my wobbly foot
While I ran home
Samantha

Spiky rimu trees.
The slight smell of dairy farm.
The dark coloured rocks.
Abbie

Leaves blowing in the wind
Birds chirping in the distance
Smooth leaves in my hand.
Conor

Stones crunch under foot
Split ends of flax poke me hard
Seaweed like bushes
Chloe

Birds chatting in trees
Lot of colorful flowers
Lots of cool bushes
Thomas

Beautiful bushes
Palm trees watchin angrily
I run terrified
Jan-Adriaan

The flax worked on me.
I see a lot of birds in the tree.
I see flax waving.
Izrael

Green grass grows quickly.
Stones crackle under my feet.
Air fills my sensors.
Samuel

Pollen circled me.
As the birds chirped in the breeze.
The grass waved goodbye.
By Rebecca

Grey stones are crunching
Green flax dancing in the wind!
I heard straw crunching
Sargam

Triple Stones cave in
Birds chirp as children talk
In the native garden
Logan

Stones crunching like chips
Prickly bush pocks me ouch
footsteps coming close.

Looking at the branches .
Branches snapping as I walked.
I look at The Rocks.

The stones were crunching.
Bushes were swaying like trees.
Flowers smell so good.

Space ... The Final Frontier

7/29/2018

How was the Milky Way created? What is the Milky Way? What is gravity? Is there life other planets? Can Earth stop spinning and what would happen if it did? What does space smell like? Can you turn gravity off? How old is the moon? Where did Earth come from? How big is space? Where did the universe come from? In space, does your heart work differently? How do people go to the toilet in space?
These are just some of the many ideas we wondered about when we started our space topic last term. We didn’t manage to answer all of the questions, but we did find out some pretty interesting information. Here are a few examples of the models we made to explain what we found out.

THE YELLOW BLOB
I chucked the yellow blob in my mouth and strawberry flavors bounced everywhere. It slid down my neck and my belly twisted like a toilet getting flushed. I was going for a second one but then the flavours stopped. My belly burst out the yellow blob, but it wasn't yellow. It was green and squishy. I was going to pick it up, but I didn't like the smell. The smells were like face planting into cow poop. I scooped the green squishy blob in my mouth and chewed, but the flavours didn’t tasted the same
.
Xymon

As the smell lingers in the air I refused  to put the disgusting mess in my mouth. The blob bounced and bonged around on my taste buds. They screamed get this off us! It’s disgusting okay
Jennifer

As the strawberry flavoured blob falls out of my hand reuben runs out to the fountain. The final pieces of roughly textured cheese were placed in my mouth. The crumbly blob was laughing at me as I placed the yellow crumble on my tongue. The crumble dissolved straight away. Flavours fired in my mouth as fast as a sniper.
Samuel

An unusual smell filled my nose. I clasped the curdled rectangular red bull flavoured substance in my quivering hand it felt cold and solid  My small tastebuds scream in agony as the flavours slosh around. My mind was reasoning about why it had to be strawberry flavoured cheese? My tummy was gurgling     every swallow I took. Finally, after a drink of shimmering water the taste abandons my mouth.
Abbie

As I dropped the ice cream looking substance into my mouth the flavours burst around. It was salty and tangy.  I loved the flavours bouncing around in my mouth. It was smooth and light and smelt like whipped cream and mayonnaise i went back for more the second one was packed with even more punch.
Conor

My eyes want to eat but my stomach isn’t too sure. The rough spiky edges feel like I am being poked lightly with a pin. It stretches like warm soft tar.I slap the gushy mixture into my mouth. The flavours burst. First I taste sweet then I taste sour, then mouldy. I swallow. It feels like my throat is sending a warning to my stomach “Watch out”. My eyes open. It has disappeared
Diana

As I put the crumbly substance into my gob, my tummy sunk like a water hole. Blue blobs ground into my taste buds making my breath grow strong  and rotten. The shrivelled fungus took over my mouth.
Mackenzie

The smell of the red bull was like strawberry. I got excited to eat the wonderful smelling thing but when I tasted  it was like vomit trying to get out. I got a piece of it to go down my throat but it was too late. Too had to come out. I ran outside. I didn’t know where the vomit went. I spat out the red bull cheese and went back inside.
Reuben

As the smell lingers in the air the white object appears in my hand as it travels at high speeds to my mouth. The sweat on my forehead starts to drip to the ground as the ivory substance interacts with my tastebuds instantly making a connection as they tell me to go back for more.
Logan

The blue piece of food crumbles into my mouth “as I chew  I think to myself this tastes like vomit”. It is squishy as it is pushed up against my tongue. My taste buds went crazy. They were jiggling and wriggling around like they had ants in there pants. And it filled my mouth with disgust.
Bradley

When I saw the dotted triangles in the white bowl, the feeling of dread came over me. As I picked up the triangle blob I shuddered with fear. When I placed the black dotted substance in mouth my taste buds jumped up and down like a bubble.
  Chloe

 Cheese
As I got the smooshy piece. it crumbled in my hand. I smelt like macaroni pasta. So I eat the smooshy piece. it squashed in my mouth and I swallowed it. The smooshy piece felt like a mushy banana in my mouth.

Reilly

As I tentatively opened my mouth, the tiny crumbles of white creamy looking blobs grinned at me. My eyes bulged as the pieces of white square figures jumped around the round bowl yelling “Pick me!”.
It smelt like mayonnaise mixed with a bit of sourness. It felt like ice cream but it was warmer and crumblier.
Finally it was time to eat it.

Pippo

Three two one. Foul taste worried me. My mouth was swelling up as the rotten cube slid across the grooves of my tongue. The blue cube wanted to escape my slimy mouth. Suddenly as half of the  cube slid down my throat, my face looked like a dried apricot. The remaining cubes made my stomach crumble and try to heave the cubes out.
By Rebecca

Nervously my fingers edged away. The oreo texture is nothing like the flavour. As I chewed down, as the skunk flavour fills my mouth. My face swells. My eyes water. ‘The cheese is made of vomit!’ I think. The flavour is unbearable. I need to spit it out but I can’t.  On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst, the disgusting blue cheese would be 10 or 11.

Is It Cheese? Update

Toroa has been wondering about cheese.  We placed a cup of milk in the fridge and one on the bench to see what would happen...
We also found out that to make cheese you need to add an acid.  If the acid is too strong, it makes plastic - which Diana found out doesn't taste very good.  We tried making some other cheeses as well.    We learnt a little about the pH of different liquids.  Mrs Barns put out different types of cheese for us to try as inspiration for our writing.  Check it out in the next post!
Milk after it has been sitting on the bench for a couple of weeks. Pretty stinky!
Milk that we put vinegar in, but didn't heat, then left on the bench for two weeks - didn't go chunky... Interesting...
Scientist Samuel demonstrated how to make paneer cheese at our school assembly. He even got parents to try the paneer and Red Bull cheese!

Year 5-8 were on the move!  We went to the Canterbury Museum and were taught and entertained by Anthony and Marisa.  The Year 6-8s learnt about the conditions on the Charlotte Jane as it travelled to New Zealand.  This linked in to our belonging unit that we studied last term.  We followed that learning up with a visit to the sunlight exhibition and learnt about reflection and refraction.  The Year 5s learnt about Sunlight, followed by some information about the ANZACs.  Thanks Canterbury Museum and all of our adult helpers!

Cheese!

Schoolkit has again provided some fantastic resources so we can have a go at making some cheese!  We have left a glass of milk in the fridge and one on the bench to see what happens - We don't think we will keep it there for much longer though :P.  We have made some different types of cheese.  Here are some photos of us trying different cheeses.  We used this taste test as inspiration for our writing.  Red Bull cheese is not Mrs Barns' favourite.

Hello, hello, can you hear me?

The Reading Ninjas have been wondering about sound and how it works.  We wondered if you could hear sound in space.  We made some string/nylon telephones and predicted whether string or nylon would work better.  We also tested to see whether big plastic cups, small plastic cups, large tins or small tins would work best.
