Other Great Happenings
Speech Makers
In August we held our annual speech competition. Year 1 and 2 have to learn and recite a poem, while everyone else has to write and deliver a speech. We had our class preliminaries to find the school finalists, and on Monday 13 August we held the finals. Parents came along to watch. Sam, Ivan, Samuel, Pippo and Freedom were selected to represent our school at the Area Speech Finals.
The Area Speech Finals were hosted by us at the Dorie Hall. We had contestants from Wakanui, Fairton, Chetsey, Lauriston, OLS and Dorie. Peter Livingston (principal of Tinwald School) and Pup Chamberlain (former Police Education Officer) were the judges. The competition was very close, but on the night Dorie School managed to pick up;
3rd place in Year 1&2 for Sam
2nd place in Year 7&8 for Freedom
1st place in Year 5&6 for Samuel and
1st place in Year 7&8 for Pippo.
We are so proud of our speakers - they did really well. Pippo and Samuel go on to the Rotary Speech Finals in Ashburton in September.

Chess Players
There are a number of keen chess players in our school who have taken part in tournaments in Christchurch. Although we are a small school with a small chess team, we were able to "mix it up" with some of the bigger schools, gaining some impressive wins, narrow losses and even a few stalemates.
Current Events Quizzers
Wednesday 19 September saw 5 teams (3 from Year 5-6, 2 from Uprear 7-8), travel to Timaru to take part in the Otago Daily Times Current Events Quiz. Although our teams did not gain any prizes on the night, they did themselves and our school proud. Well done teams!
The Great Potato Growing Competition
To mark the start of spring we are holding the "Mitre 10 Mega - Dorie School Great Potato Growing Competition". There will be prizes for a range of categories for this amazing event...
... the most potatoes...
... the heaviest crop of potatoes...
... the largest single potato...
just to name a few.
Big thanks must go to Mitre 10 Mega in Ashburton for donating the buckets, and to Dean Pye of Pye Produce for donating the seed potatoes.
