Our School
Dorie School is a well resourced, rural full primary school located in the north east of Mid Canterbury. The school has a long history of being supported by the local community and this continues today with past and present school families actively supporting the school.
In 2016, the school went through a major rebuilding programme in which we replaced two old classrooms with a large, modern, up to date learning environment with three teaching areas.
In 2021, a fourth multi-purpose teaching space was added to our existing classroom block.
We place a strong emphasis on delivering high quality teaching and learning programmes across the curriculum. This is achieved through our Teaching and Learning Beliefs:
... Determination Whakatau
... Open-mindedness Tuwhera-whakaaro
... Respect Whakaute
... Integrity Tika
... Empathy Te aroha
Linking to our Teaching and Learning Beliefs and our Values are our Student Profile and our Effective Teacher Profile. These core documents form the foundations on which we build our learning programmes for our students through our Localised Curriculum.
Adjacent to our school is the Dorie Community Preschool. This was opened 12 years ago due to the high demand for quality preschool education and day care in the local community. The school and the preschool have a cooperative and supportive working relationship. We have established a strong transition programme from preschool to school enabling new 5 year olds to be introduced and integrated into our school smoothly.
Dorie School was established in 1888 on land donated by Mr John McLean, a pioneer of the local district. Dorie School is situated near the mouth of the Rakaia River, 35km from Ashburton and 70km from Christchurch.
The name “Dorie” comes from the district in Scotland in which Mr McLean originated – “Dorie Nam Fuaram”. Literally translated this means “Grove of the Spring”.
In November 2013, our school celebrated 125 years of service to the Dorie community. To find out more about what happened at the celebrations, click the button below.
